9/24 Mon.

In the class, Rab told us what we should know for writing an academic essay by showing the major problems of student's essay. We should not use personal pronouns but clarify the name when we use people's name(not only their first name or family name but full name). Also, we are supposed not to use vague expressions like "very good" but more academic words. Too short sentences and using same word at the beginning of sentence should be avoided. We should not use words like "and", "but", "because" at the beginning of sentences. When we copy someones words, quotation mark is necessary for readers to know it is originally from other person. Quotations should not occupy over 20% of an essay. In addition, we can use more English quotations than non-English ones. When we do peer review, we should check spells, essay style, and layout. Name of writer, ID, class name must be written. I didn't type them in my book review, so from now on I will never forget to type them in my essays.

9/21 about essay

In the last class, Rab told us about rules for good essay. They were very simple and easy to remember(though I have not remembered all of them).
 for topic...5A's
academic/attracrive/argumentative/access (to imformation I need)/achievable
I have to use English source at least 80%, and can use non-English souce at most 20%.

 for structure...rule of 3!
Intro, Body1, Body2, Body3, and Conclusion should have 3 components. For example, in Intro, the first component is geting reader's attention. The second is background, and the last is thesis statement(it also should have three components). Each body paragraph is supposed to have topis sentence and more than two supporting sentences.

 for title...[Short]:[Long]
basic:detail/get attention:explain/funny:serious, etc... The opposit contents will come. I was surpsised to this idea, but it is very good to attract readers.

I will use these rules for my eassy! I am sure my essay will be better with them:)
